Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal disease identification

Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) seems innocent in the beginning stage, called gingivitis. Early symptoms include bleeding while brushing teeth, swelling of the gums, redness of the gums, or tenderness in gum tissue. By attending regular dental checkups every six months, you can avoid advanced gum disease. Our hygienists can teach you effective and easy brushing and flossing techniques or recommend a number of other adjuncts (tools) to deter plaque buildup, a primary cause of gum disease. These preventive measures will help preserve your gums for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

If you notice the early warning signs of periodontal disease or if you have not seen a dentist in the past six months, call your Manitowoc dentist to schedule an appointment. During your routine visit, a dental hygienist will assess your gums for signs of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in American adults. It has also been linked to increased risk for osteoporosis, heart attacks, strokes, complications with diabetes, and low-weight births. The bacteria can deteriorate gums, as well as bone structure.

Periodontal Therapy

If your gums show signs of periodontal disease in any phase, we will suggest more frequent visits for periodontal therapy that may include scaling, root planing, Arestin antibiotic treatment or referral to a periodontist if more aggressive treatment or periodontal surgery is required.

Commonly referred to as a "deep cleaning," scaling and root planing is very different than a routine cleaning. Scaling and Root Planing is a therapeutic procedure designed to help treat and restore periodontal health. Periodontal disease is caused by a buildup of calculus, plaque, and stain on the crowns and root surfaces of teeth. It can result in major damage to the soft tissue and the bone that supports the teeth. Left untreated, this disease progresses to the ultimate loss of teeth.

In periodontal disease, gingival tissue will detach from teeth and periodontal pockets form. Scaling and root planning is intended to provide a healthy tissue environment in which tissues re-adapt to normal tooth surfaces.

It’s always a great experience at Lakeview Dental! Everyone, from the front desk to Dr.Song, is always friendly, professional, and thorough. Lakeview is also one of the few places that offer GBF therapy (hygienist, Brenda, is trained and skilled in this) as an alternative to the usual form of cleaning by scraping. It’s one reason we make the 60 plus mile drive to Lakeview. Thank you for over 30 years of great service and care! Carol Ferlo

I started going to Lakeview Dental a few years ago from transitioning from an out of town dentist all of my 60+ years, which was 40 miles away. I haven't had any complaints or concerns yet. Now, with Dr. Song's addition and experience, it makes it even more gratifying to know that I made the right decision so far!
